An Important History

The construction of Marine Terrace began in 1956 and the building was completed for occupancy in 1957. At five stories, Marine Terrace was the tallest and largest building in Pompano Beach. With its elegant, mid-century style, Art Deco details and distinctive, circular stairways, Marine Terrace has aged gracefully and is one of the beach's most architecturally significant buildings. 

Over the years, a committed co-op board and association has ensured that the building, amenities and property are all maintained and upgraded, so that life at Marine Terrace is as enjoyable as when it was first built.

The History of Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach celebrated the 100th anniversary of its incorporation on July 3, 2008. It is the second oldest city in Broward County, and the fifth oldest in all of South Florida. Only Key West, West Palm Beach, Miami and Dania Beach became municipalities earlier than Pompano (the “Beach” came later).

Many early residents were farmers, coming south to escape the effects of the mid-decade freezes. Although the local community at first was located around what was then known as Lettuce Lake (now Lake Santa Barbara), the coming of the railroad led to development farther west. 

A small commercial district began to grow near the Florida East Coast Railway depot. In 1900, M. Z. Cavandish opened a general store at N.E. First Street and Flagler Avenue. In 1906 Pompano became the southernmost settlement in newly-created Palm Beach County. That year, the Hillsboro Lighthouse was completed on the beach.
